Forward power for Norway

‘Forward Power for Norway’ will be the theme for UMAMI ARENA in February 2023. There is no doubt about it: UMAMI ARENA will be a rare showcase – and we now see the contours emerging of the largest and most important meeting place for this business sector within food and beverage.

When the doors open at NOVA Spektrum Lillestrøm for UMAMI ARENA on 14-17 February 2023, this will be THE gathering place to be for everyone who, in one way or another, has their livelihood, passion or engagement in food and beverage.

“Together with this sector, we are harnessing the collective power of meeting together and turning the spotlight on the ambitions and room for opportunity of the business. UMAMI will be the arena that contributes to increased trade, value creation, knowledge-sharing and inspiration for everyone who works with food and beverage,” says Torill Engelberg, who is the director for UMAMI ARENA.

“Companies, professionals and organisations within food and beverage create large, positive ripple effects around the whole country,” says Engelberg. “We are talking here about creating workplaces, new solutions – and activities that enable both local communities and individuals to flourish. This is the power that we wish to stimulate,” she continues.

According to the report ‘Food nation Norway 2030’ from 2020, the wider food and drink business in Norway represents more than 200,000 jobs. The business accounts for a large proportion of both employment and value creation in Norwegian society. It is therefore important to meet together to stimulate continued growth and higher profitability so that we can make room for new investments and contribute to increased recruitment.

Three powerful directions
“Based on the theme of ‘Forward Power for Norway’, we have together with UMAMI ARENA’s board and exhibitor committee defined some of the most important directions and most engaging themes both for our co-operation partners and exhibitors at UMAMI ARENA,” says Engelberg.
Therefore, together with the sector, we are gathering our power in these three directions:

The Power of Creativity
Board member and general manager of the Norwegian Chefs Association (NKL), Espen Wasenius, is looking forward to lifting The Power of Creativity to the forefront as one of the three themes:
“Innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship are important to be able to utilise raw materials, develop new production methods, new products and services, and create new jobs,” he says.
New forms of co-operation and interaction between the different players are decisive to find the best solutions and lift us forward.

“At UMAMI ARENA we hope that many will put on show the newest and best in their part of the business. It will be important to display talents and share our experiences, so that collectively we have the power to take Norway further forward,” says Espen Wasenius.

The Power of Sustainability
The dimension of the climate and environment has great significance. The UN’s 2019 report on sustainable development, entitled ‘The Future is Now’, has led to heightened attention on the impact represented by agriculture, and the food and drink business.
“The food of the future must be sustainable. Those producers and suppliers who can document that production of raw materials and input factors, processing and distribution occur within a sustainable framework will have a strong competitive advantage. Therefore, The Power of Sustainability will be a central theme for UMAMI ARENA,” says Ingunn Storetvedt Eriksen, marketing & communications director for NHO Food and Drink, who is also a member of the board.

The Power of Work
Morten Karlsen, director of procurement and enlistment with NHO Travel, also sits on the board and is delighted that The Power of Work will be one of the three directions.
“Clever professionals are a prerequisite to secure a stable and positive development. The sector lacks manpower. Therefore, it is wholly decisive to secure strong and long-term recruitment for all disciplines related to the food and drink business, as well as for those who run businesses within accommodation, tourism and excursions,” says Karlsen.
